Ruling on a man plucking hair from his forehead and between the eyebrows
What is the ruling on a man removing excessive hair from his face with a thread? Whether it is on the beard, between the eyebrows or on the forehead?.
Praise be to Allaah.
It is not permissible for a man to remove anything from his beard because of the many ahaadeeth which enjoin leaving it alone and letting it grow. The definition of the beard is that which grows on the jawbones, cheeks and chin. See the answer to question no. 69749.
As for hair other than that, such as the hair that grows on the forehead and between the eyebrows, there is nothing wrong with removing it according to some scholars.
Others are of the view that it is not allowed, especially if it is removed by plucking, with a thread or otherwise.
The reason for the difference of opinion is the difference of opinion about the meaning of the word namas (plucking) which is mentioned in the hadeeth which curses the one who does that. Some of them interpreted it as specific to the eyebrows and some interpreted it as including all facial hair. Namas is haraam for both men and women, because it is changing the creation of Allaah, and there is no difference between men and women in this case.
The first view – which is that namas applies only to the eyebrows – was held by a number of scholars, and the scholars of the Standing Committee issued fatwas on that basis. They stated that it is permissible to remove facial hair apart from the beard and eyebrows, and we have quoted their fatwa in the answer to question no. 1173 and 21400.
The second view – which is that namas refers to removal all of facial hair – was held by many scholars and was favoured by Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him), who said it is not allowed for men to pluck hair from their faces.
He (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked): What is the ruling on plucking grey hairs from the hair and beard?
He replied:
With regard to the beard or facial hair it is haraam, because this is namas. Namas means plucking the facial hair, of which the beard is a part, and it was proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed the woman who plucks facial hair and the woman who has that done. We say to this man: if you were to look for every hair that has turned white and pluck it out, you would have no beard left. So leave what Allaah has created as He created it and do not pluck anything.
But if it refers to plucking hair from the head, it does not reach the level of being haraam, because that is not namas. End quote from Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (11/123).
It seems – and Allaah knows best – that namas refers specifically to removing hair from the eyebrows. Based on that there is nothing wrong with a man removing hair from his face other than the beard and eyebrows.

The Ansari women came to the Prophet and mentioned that to him and said, "Her (my daughter's) husband suggested that I should let her wear false hair." The Prophet said, "No, (don't do that) for Allah sends His curses upon such ladies who lengthen their hair artificially."

Forbidden Haircuts

that 'Umar bin Nafi' told him that Nafi', Maula 'Abdullah had heard 'Umar saying, "I heard Allah's Apostle forbidding Al-Qaza'." 'Ubaidullah added: I said, "What is Al-Qaza'?" 'Ubaidullah pointed (towards his head) to show us and added, "Nafi' said, 'It is when a boy has his head shaved leaving a tuft of hair here and a tuft of hair there." Ubaidullah pointed towards his forehead and the sides of his head. 'Ubaidullah was asked, "Does this apply to both girls and boys?" He said, "I don't know," but Nafi' said, -The boy." 'Ubaidullah added, "I asked Nafi' again, and he said, 'As for leaving hair on the temples and the back part of the boy's head, there is no harm, but Al-Qaza' is to leave a tuft of hair on his forehead unshaved while there is no hair on the rest of his head, and also to leave hair on either side of his head.' "

A time limit has been prescribed for us for clipping the moustache, cutting the nails, plucking hair under the armpits, shaving the pubes, that it should not be neglected far more than forty nights.
Braided (Plaited) Hair
Hadith - Muslim, Narrated Umm Salamah
I said: Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who has closely plaited hair on my head; should I undo it for taking a bath, because of sexual intercourse? He (the Prophet ) said: No, it is enough for you to throw three handfuls of water on your head and then pour water over yourself, and you shall be purified.
Hadith - Muslim, Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas
Ibn Abbas saw Abdullah ibn al-Harith observing the prayer and (his hair) was plaited behind his head. He (Abdullah ibn Abbas) stood up and unfolded them. While going back (from the prayer) he met Ibn Abbas and said to him: why is it that you touched my head? He (Ibn Abbas) replied: (The man who observes prayer with plaited hair) is like one who prays with his hands tied behind.

Hair Coloring

Allah's Apostle said, "The Jews and the Christians do not dye (their grey hair), so you shall do the opposite of what they do (i.e. dye your grey hair and beards)."
Hadith - Muslim, Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah
When AbuQuhafah (father of AbuBakr) came in the Year of Victory or on the Day of Victory (to the Prophet to pledge his allegiance to him) his head and his beard were white like hyssop. He (the Prophet ) commanded or the women were commanded by him that they should change this with something (that the color of his hair should be changed).

Question:
Is it permissible for a woman to dye the hair upon her head with black dye?
Answer:
It is not permissible for a woman or other than her to colour their hair with black dye, because of the statement of the Messenger sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam:
”Change this colour, and stay away from the black (colour).” [1]
As for changing (the hair colour) with other than black, then no problem, or (changing it) with henna or mixed al-Katam, [2] so there is no problem with this if the colour changes to other than black, or between black and red.

Grey Hair
Hadith - Abu Dawud, Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As
The Apostle of Allah said: Do not pluck out grey hair. If any believer grows a grey hair in Islam, he will have light on the Day of Resurrection. (This is Sufyan's version). Yahya's version says: Allah will record on his behalf a good deed for it, and will blot out a sin for it.

The Prophet said: The best things with which grey hair are changed are henna and katam.
Hadith - Abu Dawud, Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud
The Prophet of Allah disliked ten things: Yellow colouring, meaning khaluq, dyeing grey hair, trailing the lower garment, wearing a gold signet-ring, a woman decking herself before people who are not within the prohibited degrees, throwing dice, using spells except with the Mu'awwidhatan, wearing amulets, withdrawing the penis before the semen is discharged, in the case of a woman who is wife or not a wife, and having intercourse with a woman who is suckling a child; but he did not declare them to be prohibited.

The Prophet used to like to start from the right side on wearing shoes, combing his hair and cleaning or washing himself and on doing anything else.

Hadith - Bukhari 5:504, Narrated Ka'b bin Ujra
We were in the company of Allah's Apostle at Al-Hudaibiya in the state of Ihram and the pagans did not allow us to proceed (to the Ka'ba). I had thick hair and lice started falling on my face. The Prophet passed by me and said, "Are the lice of your head troubling you?" I replied, "Yes." The sub-narrator added, "Then the following Divine Verse was revealed: 'And if anyone of you is ill or has an ailment in his scalp, (necessitating shaving) must pay a ransom (Fida) of either fasting or feeding the poor, Or offering a sacrifice.' (2.196)"
Ghusl
Hadith - Abu Dawud, Narrated Thawban
Shurayh ibn Ubayd said: Jubayr ibn Nufayr gave me a verdict about the bath because of sexual defilement that Thawban reported to them that they asked the Prophet about it. He (the Prophet ) replied: As regards man, he should undo the hair of his head and wash it until the water should reach the roots of the hair. But there is no harm if the woman does not undo it (her hair) and pour three handfuls of water over her head.
Grooming
Hadith - Muwatta 51.7
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam that Ata ibn Yasar told him that the Messenger of Allah was in the mosque when a man came in with dishevelled hair and beard. The Messenger of Allah motioned with his hand that he should be sent out to groom his hair and beard. The man did so and then returned. The Messenger of Allah said, "Isn't this better than that one of you should come with his head dishevelled, as if he were a shaytan?"

During Salah
Hadith - Abu Dawud, Narrated AbuRafi'
Sa'id ibn AbuSa'id al-Maqburi reported on the authority of his father that he saw AbuRafi' the freed slave of the Prophet , passing by Hasan ibn Ali (Allah be pleased with them) when he was standing offering his prayer. He had tied the back knot of his hair. AbuRafi' untied it. Hasan turned to him with anger, AbuRafi' said to him: Concentrate on your prayer and do not be angry: I heard the Apostle of Allah say: This is the seat of the devil, referring to the back knot of the hair.

Clip the moustache and nails, etc, within 40 days
Women should not put all her hair up on the top of her haid like a camel hump. She may put it up at home as long as some hair lays on her neck still, but not when leaving the house in hijab where the hump can be seen to be under the hijab and drawing attention to her hair.
While doing salah, a man should not have his hair braided or pulled back in a knot
Comb your hair from the right side first
Destroy your clipped nails and hair after cutting it by collecting it and burying it. It is not a sin if you don't destroy your hair, but it is preferable.
A woman should not have a hairstyle that resembles a man's hairstyle.
Do not imitate the hair styles or colors of the Jews and Christians; do the opposite!
Remember... Allah, subhana watala, sees everything we do!

Fatwa
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
It is dislikeable to pluck out grey hair from the head or beard as the Prophet said: "Do not pluck out any white hair [from your head or beard], as there is no Muslim whose hair becomes grey in Islam [while he is a Muslim] except that it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection." [Abu Daawood and At-Tirmithi] Moreover, Anas said: "We used to dislike for a man to pluck out white hair from his head or his beard." [Muslim] Indeed, Ibn Qudaamah said: 'It is disliked to pluck out white hair.' Additionally, Imaam An-Nawawi said: 'It would not be strange to say that it is forbidden to pluck out white hair from one's head or beard because of the existence of a clear text on it that it is disliked; and there is no difference between taking the white hair off the head or beard.'
The Shaafi'ee, Maaliki and Hanbali schools and other scholars are of the view that it is disliked to pluck out grey hair [from one's head or beard] because of the existence of the above narration.

Islam permits, and in fact requires, that the Muslim be careful about his appearance, dress decently, maintain his dignity, and enjoy what Allah has created for the purpose of clothing and adornment.
From the Islamic point of view, clothing has two purposes: to cover the body and to beautify the appearance. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala counts His bestowal of clothing and adornment upon human beings as one of His favors to mankind: O children of Adam! Verily, We have bestowed upon you clothing to cover your shame as well as to be an adornment to you.... (7:26) Whoever neglects either of these two aspects, covering or adornment, has deviated from the way of Islam toward the path of Satan. Accordingly, Allah warns people concerning both nakedness and neglect of good appearance, as these are snares of Satan, in the following verses: O children of Adam! Do not let Satan seduce in the same manner as he expelled your parents (Adam and Eve) from the Garden, stripping them of their raiment in order to expose their shame.... (7:27)
O children of Adam! Wear your beautiful apparel at every place of worship, and eat and drink, but do not be wasteful.... (7:31)
Islam has made it obligatory on Muslims to cover their private parts, which everyone naturally feels a sense of shame at exposing in order that they may be distinguished from the naked animals; in fact, it instructs them to avoid uncovering these parts of their bodies even when they are alone so that they may attain perfection in morals and religion.
Bahaz ibn Hakim, on the authority of his grandfather, reported the latter as saying: I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah! What should we conceal and what can we show of our private parts?' He replied, 'Let no one see them except your wife or your bondwoman.' I then asked, 'What if some people live together (e.g., during travel, or camping)?' He replied, 'If you can manage it, try not to let anyone see them ' I then said, 'And what if no one is present (meaning if one is alone)?' He said, 'Allah Tabarak wa Ta'ala is most deserving of your modesty.' (Reported by Ahmad, Abu Daoud, al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah.)
